It annoys me to think that so many good leisure groups and activities are largely ignored by the younger generations.
Tonight was my first time at my local Poetry Discussion Group and I got the kind of response I hear far too often – ‘ah, a fresh face’ or ‘young blood, just what we need’.
These kinds of groups, as well as general interest courses and other gatherings of people who share hobbies, are so often full of people well past middle-age. It’s not bad that older people go of course, it’s great that they still have interests at their time of life, I just mean it’s a shame other people don’t go too.
There’s a high possibility of these groups dying out if ‘new blood’ doesn’t keep coming in and that would be a shame; society would have lost a great asset.
I’m kind of getting a bit sick of sticking out like a sore thumb, always being at least 30 years younger than everyone else.
Maybe it’s just a social phenomenon, that once you hit a certain age these kinds of activities become alluring. Maybe I’m just odd for being interested by them at my age but I don’t think so, I encourage others of my generation to follow my lead and set a precedent. We don’t have to go along with social norms, we can change them for the better.
