Book Review – The Drowning Girl

Written by Margaret Leroy, this novel originally came out in 2009 but I’ve only just discovered it. I didn’t know there was any kind of paranormal element to it as this wasn’t stated anywhere on the cover. I really wasn’t looking for anything paranormal and if I had of known this before I got it I probably wouldn’t have bothered. By the time I got into the story and this was sprung on me I was disappointed and even felt mildly deceived – it wasn’t the book I thought it was. I like to know what I’m buying before I buy it.
Despite this I finished it and found it relatively interesting. The pace was only just acceptable - any slower and I would have lost interest.

Some parts were predictable and the constant repetition of certain phrases really frustrated me – there’s no need to put the line ‘I said nothing’ in every chapter!
Generally I felt sorry for Grace’s character so the author did do something right. I could empathise with her situation but after a while I felt myself getting frustrated that she was so much of a doormat and wouldn’t stand up for herself at all.

I also think a brief epilogue would have been nice. I wanted to know what happened when they got home, if Grace got her man or a new job, if Sylvie got back into nursery and what Karen would say about it all.

Needless to say, I wasn’t satisfied but I do feel I’m being a bit too harsh. It did have some redeeming qualities - mainly that the characters were believable. The way Grace longed for Dominic, for example, they way she acted around him was spot on. I knew exactly how she felt.

All things considered, it gets 6.5 out of 10 from me.
